Workshop on “‘Managing Transboundary Priority Areas: Towards a governance mechanism on the conservation of the south Adriatic-Ionian marine ecosystem” – 13 and 14 of July, 2021.

Partners on the MBPC project are organising a 2-day workshop on the governance of transboundary sensitive areas in the Adriatic-Ionian region. This online workshop, entitled “Managing Transboundary Priority Areas: Towards a governance mechanism on the conservation of the south Adriatic-Ionian marine ecosystem”, will take place on 13th of July, from 14:00 to 17:30, and 14th of July 2021, from 09:00 to 12:30.

This workshop builds on recommendations from the 2019 workshop “Managing Transboundary Impacts In Priority Areas: Towards an Action Plan for Ecosystem-based Management (EBM) in the Southern Adriatic Sea Ecoregion”.

The workshop seeks to identify appropriate governance mechanisms to integrate ecosystem-based management, marine spatial planning and area-based conservation principles into a transboundary action plan for the south Adriatic-Ionian region. Options to embed this governance mechanism into the existing multilateral initiatives in the region (e.g., EUSAIR, the Adriatic Ionian Euroregion and the Adriatic and Ionian Initiative) will be explored.
An early draft framework identifying concrete and achievable activities, key enablers and most favourable connections with existing regional governance initiatives will be developed based on partipants’ contributions.

To allow for productive outcomes, only selected institutions have been invited to participate. Due to the current pandemic context, the foreseen onsite workshop scheduled for May 2021, was adapted to an online format for this July.
